The mridanga, also known as the mridangam, is a traditional percussion instrument from South India, particularly popular in the Carnatic music tradition. It is one of the primary rhythmic accompaniment instruments used in classical Carnatic music concerts and dance performances.

The mridanga is a double-headed drum, typically made of a single block of wood with a cylindrical shape. The two heads are made of Ahimsa Leather and are stretched across either side of the drum’s body. The smaller head, called the “valanthalai,” is played with the fingers and is responsible for producing the higher-pitched sounds. The larger head, known as the “bayan,” is played with the palm and fingers to create the deeper tones.

The mridanga player sits on the floor while playing the instrument. The drum is positioned horizontally on the player’s lap or placed on the ground, with the heads facing up. The player uses their fingers, palms, and sometimes even the heel of the hand to strike the drum’s heads in various ways, producing a wide range of tones and complex rhythmic patterns.

In Carnatic music, the mridanga player plays a crucial role in providing rhythmic support to the vocalist or instrumentalist. They follow a system of rhythmic syllables called “sol-kattu” to communicate and execute intricate rhythmic patterns during the performance. Skilled mridangam players are highly respected and sought-after accompanists in Carnatic music concerts, and their artistry is considered essential for enhancing the overall musical experience.
